Cairngorms National Park offers splendid nature
Preface
The Cairngorms National Park is one of the two national parks of Scotland. It is the largest of the two. For an idea of the scale: it is larger than e.g. all of Luxembourg!
The Cairngorms National Park was established in September 2003. In October 2010 it was expanded southward. Almost half of the National Park is 'wild nature', protected under national and European law. A quarter of the native forest of Scotland can be found here.

Geography and ecology
The park is located in the Scottish Highlands, north of Edinburgh. It owes its name to the Cairngorm mountain range, of which Cairngorm Mountain is one of the highest peaks. Four of the highest mountains in Britain are found within its borders. Three large rivers cross the Cairngorms and there are more than 60 lochs (large lakes) and thousands of lochans (small lakes). The forest area within the park is a remnant of the "Ancient Forest of Caledon". It offers living space for countless birds, insects and mammals, amphibians and mosses.

Nature conservation
The Cairngorms National Park authority manages the park, or at least coordinates it. A few nature reserves sit within the park, each of it has its own manager. And then there are the "estates": large private estates that often offer attractions to earn a few pounds. Unique is the collaboration between landowners and managers of the Cairngorms National Park in "Cairngorms Connect". The parties have jointly developed an ambitious 200-year vision. The plans aim at letting having conservation go hand in hand with livelihood and tourism. Space for nature and for people as well.
